Telegram chat ID: what it is and what it's for

By Mario Antonini·

A chat ID is the number that identifies a conversation on Telegram. Every conversation a bot has, whether private, in a group or in a channel, has one. In the Bot API, it’s the id field of the Chat object, described as a unique identifier for that chat.

What it’s for

Developers use the chat ID to tell a bot where a message goes. It’s the chat_id parameter in methods such as sendMessage. That’s why it shows up so often in n8n and system alert tutorials: someone has to say which conversation the alert goes to.

How to find it

The direct way is to read what reaches the bot: every incoming message carries a chat object with the id inside. Send your bot a message and look at that payload through getUpdates or a webhook.

A warning for developers: the number can go past 32 bits. The documentation says it has at most 52 significant bits, so store it in a 64-bit integer, because some languages may misread the value.

Having a chat ID doesn’t let you send

This is the most common misunderstanding. Having someone’s number doesn’t give you permission to message them: bots can’t start conversations. The person has to contact the bot first.

What about Flow4You?

You don’t need to deal with chat IDs. Each person who presses Start becomes a lead of the bot, and you choose who gets what through flows, tags and broadcasts. To see how that fits together, read our Telegram bot builder guide.
